In this video, you see a student use a customized, "cored out" book to learn to use the personal pronoun "me". Previously, he referred to himself using his name. Using core has an added benefit in that it also promotes pre-reading skills such as scanning left to right. Additionally, since all the core pictures are paired with written words, students get added early exposure to common sight words.
This video also shows a student using a "cored out" book to reinforce the phrase "I see" as well as learn color words.
This video shows a student using her core board to request a toy by using the phrase, "I want a turn". Notice that we pair the student's pointing with the verbal production. We also respond to the request immediately so the communication is meaningful.
This video shows us introducing the Winter Clothing Core Book to students during their LRC time. Ideally, when reading the book to your child, you would point to each word as you say it. Notice that we added the question, "Where do socks (e.g.) go?" as well as, "Put on ____" using the Core Board. This builds on previously introduced vocabulary.
